BUYER'S GUIDE

What to Look for When Hiring an IT Support Company in North Jersey

By A to Z Tech Services — Wayne, NJ

Choosing an IT support company is one of the most consequential technology decisions a small business makes. The wrong choice costs you time, money, and security. Here is what actually matters — and the red flags that tell you to walk away.

The 6 Questions to Ask Every IT Provider

What is your response time SLA and what happens if you miss it?

A legitimate provider has specific, written SLAs — not vague promises. Critical issues should be under 1 hour. If they cannot tell you a specific number or have no penalty for missing it, that tells you everything.

Are your technicians local or offshore?

For a North Jersey business that needs on-site support, this matters enormously. An offshore help desk is fine for basic password resets. It is useless when you have a server down and need someone in the building.

What security stack is included in the managed IT fee?

A managed IT plan that includes only antivirus is not a managed IT plan — it is IT theater. Ask specifically whether EDR (not just antivirus), email security, dark web monitoring, and MFA enforcement are included or cost extra.

Can you provide references from NJ businesses similar to ours?

Good providers have clients who are happy to talk. If they hesitate or cannot produce references in your industry, that is a red flag.

What is your process for onboarding a new client?

Proper onboarding takes time. A provider who wants to start billing on day one without documenting your environment is not doing the foundational work that makes managed IT effective.

What happens when we want to leave?

You own your data, your passwords, and your documentation. A good provider has an offboarding process that hands everything back cleanly. A bad one holds your data hostage.

  • No references from businesses similar to yours in size or industry
  • They react poorly to questions about their process or tools
